Parking Day embraced in Paddington Green Precinct

Paddington Green Precinct members, Bliss Ecowear and Sol Breads set up impressive “people parks” for the international PARK(ing) Day on 18 September.  Parking Day is all about claiming back for people some of the space used for cars.

Other Green Precinct members, Epic Cycles were on hand for free bicycle checks and Satya was dispensing welcome massage.

The Green Precinct says thank you to Fiona of Peace Train Productions for co-ordinating and setting up the parks, also to Mt Tamborine Turf Supplies for donating the turf.

It was great to see people gathering for a relaxing chit chat over coffee, watching the passing parade of perplexed car drivers.   Bliss Ecowear  and Sol Breads set up the parks opposite each other on Latrobe Terrace, creating quite a buzz with people drawn to the sense of community created by the parks.

Brisbane PARK(ing) Day is all about
1. Calling attention to the importance for urban public spaces
2. Rethinking the way we use our streets
3. Creating diverse conversations about how we can make sustainable cities

World Environment day – 5th June

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day’s agenda is to:

  1. Give a human face to environmental issues;
  2. Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
  3. Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
  4. Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

The theme for WED 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change’. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

This year’s host is Mexico which reflects the growing role of the Latin American country in the fight against climate change, including its growing participation in the carbon markets.

Mexico is also a leading partner in UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign. The country, with the support of its President and people, has spearheaded the pledging and planting of some 25 per cent of the trees under the campaign. Accounting for around 1.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is demonstrating its commitment to climate change on several fronts.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon states that the WED celebration will “further underline Mexico’s determination to manage natural resources and deal with the most demanding challenge of the 21st century – climate change.”

Ride to Work Day

Thursday 19th March

Epic Cycles encourages you to participate in Ride to Work Day on Thursday, 19 March.   There are two meeting points in the local area:

1) Paddington – Trammies Corner, crn. of Latrobe Tce and Prince St.  Meets at 7am.

2) Rosalie – Epic Cycles, crn. of Baroona Rd & Fernberg Rd. Meets at 7:10am.  (The Paddington group will drop down to Baroona Rd and join the Rosalie group to ride to the city via the river bikepath.)

Ride to Work Day, one of many events during Bike Week, sees over 1000 cyclists converge from all directions to share a free breakfast at the top of the mall in the city.

There are prizes to be won but the best bit is the buzz of mingling with others who love how bikes are part of a greener future.  Even if you don’t work in the city, there’s plenty of time to join in the fun and then head back home.

For more details, phone Epic Cycles on 3368 2324 or check out bq.org.au.  Bike Week is proudly sponsored by Epic Cycles.

See you there!!!
