The latest from the Brisbane’s Green Precinct
Paddington’s Green Precinct has a range of products & services to help you create a Green Christmas. Here are just a few tips:
Tips for an eco-friendly Christmas
1) Reducing your consumption doesn’t mean you have to be a Scrooge.
One of the best ways to be green is to consume less. But this doesn’t mean you have to give up the gift giving ritual & risk being kicked out of the family. There’s plenty of object-less gifts in the Green Precinct such as:
* a massage or beauty treatment from Sowelu, Urban Retreat or Vitale
* a bicycle service from Epic Cycles
* yoga classes from yogababy or Sowelu
* a planning session with organic garden guru Satya
2) Make your Christmas meal earth- & animal-friendly
Modern farming methods can damage the environment in a number of ways. On the other hand, farming also has the potential to make positive contributions such as carbon storage through better soil care & improved animal welfare with better conditions for animals.
Keep in mind, too, that more people are reducing their meat intake for environmental reasons (even Oprah’s doing it!). Providing meat-free & gluten-free options will keep your guests happy. Imagine setting your table with:
* biodynamic or organic wine & beer from Spiros Bottleshop
* organic fruit, veggies & meat substitutes from Fundamental Foodstore
* traditional, organic sourdough bread (including gluten-free options) from Sol Breads
* organic meat & poultry from The Meat-ting Place
3) Support fair-trade & sweat-shop free products
Being green isn’t just about buying recycled timber products, instead of new, hardwood products. To be sustainable, we also have to be socially just. Spread your love around by buying both overseas-made fair-trade products & locally-produced sweat-shop free products such as:
* Global Mamas reversible girl’s dresses at Bliss Ecowear
* the wonderful world of handcrafted toys at The Trading Circle
* the Giving Tree coffee bean bracelet at Biome Ecostores
4) What you already know about being green still applies
There is a wide range of choice in the Green Precinct when it comes to buying a gift that meets ‘traditional’ green ideas of re-using or recycling, being organic, using sustainable materials and so on. Check out:
* funky, reusable nappies from Nest Nappies
* bicycle cargo trailers from Epic Cycles
* organic cotton underwear at Bliss Ecowear
* solar chargers at Biome Ecostores
* organic skincare at Vitale
From all of us at the Green Precinct, we wish you happy holidays & look forward to helping you to ‘green’ your life in 2010.
